The streets of Velmora had raised Sorin Valmere from the age of seven. No parents or home. Just cobblestones and shadows and the constant feeling of hunger that taught her to take what she needed to survive. She was good at stealing. Better than good. By the time she was twelve, she could lift a merchant's coin purse without breaking a sweat. By fifteen, she could slip past locked doors like smoke through cracks. Now, at nineteen, she had earned a reputation in the underground as someone who could acquire the unacquirable. Yesterday, she had hit level fifteen. The notification had appeared at dawn, floating in her vision as all System messages did. She had dismissed the level-up fanfare and gone straight to her new skill. [Essence Extraction] - Turn any defeated or willing subject into a potion. The subject's mana becomes the liquid itself. Effects vary based on subject properties. Strange. Most thieves got skills like Enhanced Lockpicking or Silent Step at fifteen. But potion creation? That was alchemist territory. Still, if she could make potions without ingredients, without equipment, without training... that changed everything. She needed to test it. The Monster Forest outside Velmora's walls was dangerous but manageable for someone of her level. Sorin slipped past the gate guards at midday and followed the winding path into the treeline, dagger in hand. The first target was a Forest Rat. She found it gnawing on a fallen acorn, beady eyes tracking her approach. One quick slash and it was dead, body dissolving into motes of light as the System registered the kill. She focused on the skill. [Essence Extraction] activated. The rat's remains shimmered and compressed, matter folding in on itself until a small glass vial materialized where the corpse had been. Inside, a murky brown liquid sloshed against the walls. [Rat's Swiftness Potion] - Grants 50% increased movement speed for 3 minutes. Rank: D. Sorin's breath caught. Three minutes of enhanced speed for killing one rat. The implications were staggering. She could farm weak monsters endlessly, build an inventory of potions worth more than anything she could steal. She spent the next hour hunting. Rabbits became stamina potions. A snake yielded poison resistance. A giant beetle produced a hardening elixir. Her pack grew heavy with clinking vials. Then she saw the slime. It sat in a small clearing, a mound of translucent green gel roughly the size of a dog. Slimes were common monsters, barely worth experience, but she had not converted one yet. What properties would it have? She approached carefully. Slimes were slow but their acidic membrane could dissolve flesh on contact. She circled behind it and struck hard, her dagger sinking into the gelatinous mass. The slime shuddered and died. [Essence Extraction] activated. The light began to gather. But something was wrong. The slime's membrane was refracting the skill's energy, bending it, bouncing it back like sunlight off a mirror. The extraction hit Sorin instead. 'WHAT!?' Heat exploded through her body. Not painful heat, but transformative heat, the kind that meant something fundamental was changing at her core. Her skin began to tingle, then burn, then go completely numb. She looked down at her hands. They were melting. Not dissolving or falling apart. Melting into liquid, her flesh losing cohesion, fingers blurring together into a shapeless mass. The sensation was indescribable, like being unmade from the inside out. Her bones softened. Her muscles liquefied. Her arms stopped being arms and became streams of green fluid. 'NO NO NO!' Her legs gave out beneath her, but she did not fall normally. She collapsed like a water balloon losing pressure, her lower body spreading across the forest floor in a puddle of herself. The green liquid that had been her legs pooled around her diminishing torso. Her skin was hardening in some places. Becoming glass. She could feel it, the crystalline structure forming around her essence, containing what remained of her physical form. A bottle was taking shape with her inside it. Her clothes dissolved into the liquid. Her dagger clattered to the ground beside her new form. Her vision shifted, becoming strange and refracted, seeing the world through curved glass walls. 'I turned myself into a potion. I actually turned MYSELF into a potion!' She tried to move. The liquid inside her sloshed, her green body wobbling, but she had no limbs anymore. No muscles to flex. She was a container of magical fluid sitting on the forest floor. Her eyes, somehow still present as darker spots in the glass, stared up at the canopy above. 'How did I even... the slime reflected it... oh gods, what do I do now?' The forest was silent around her. Nobody knew where she was. Nobody would come looking. She was alone, trapped in glass, waiting for something she could not control. Hours passed. Sorin could not mark time accurately anymore. She had no heartbeat to count, no breathing to measure. Only the s
