Cleaning, running errands, helping out or whatever!” she said with those big eyes. Emilia had finally spoken to her father about it, and to Bianca’s surprise and excitement, he agreed to give her a permanent position. “Yaaay, I’m so happy that you will get that Job, we will have so much fun!” Emilia said happily. It felt like a real opportunity for someone who had been struggling to find stable work. What Emilia didn’t know was that her father had already decided the loud, aimless girl who had been hanging around his daughter for years had finally outstayed her welcome. On Bianca’s first evening at the villa, her friend’s father offered her the contract. “Here you go, your permanent Job here. Welcome to the Villa.” he said after Bianca had signed without reading the contract. He poured her a glass of what looked like rose wine for her, while he poured himself some rum. “Cheers.” he said as their glasses softly clinked. He smiled at her and gave her a pat on the shoulder as he left. “Should’ve read that more closely.” he mumbled into his beard. The changes began almost immediately. It started in her skin. Within seconds it tightened and smoothed over, losing every trace of its natural texture as it turned into glossy, seamless fiberglass. Bianca gasped and grabbed the edge of the table, watching in shock as her arms stiffened and began to shine under the kitchen lights. Her fingers locked into position, no longer able to bend the way they should. A strange cold emptiness spread rapidly through her body as the nanobots hollowed her out from the inside, dissolving everything soft and replacing it with lightweight plastic ribs and supports. Her legs locked straight beneath her. She felt her knees and hips click into rigid, rotating joints as clean separation lines formed around them. When she tried to take a step, her feet refused to move anymore. They had become solid, rounded molds. In the final seconds her face tightened. Her lips pulled into a soft, unchanging smile as the nanobots painted over her features with a smooth, idealized mannequin expression. Her eyes became fixed and glossy while her long hair turned stiff and synthetic, turning into a wig. She tried to scream, but only a soft, breathy sound escaped her hollow throat. Thirty seconds was all it took for Bianca to be completely transformed into a glossy, hollow fiberglass mannequin that could do nothing but stare silently. The staff moved quickly... they posed her properly with her arms bent at ninety degrees and carried her out to the grand staircase. A thin chrome pole was slid into her right leg and fixed to a heavy circular baseplate. Etched into the metal in elegant lettering was her name: BIANCA. A small white card was placed on the silver tray they positioned in her stiff hands. It simply read “Refreshments”. She was left standing there, a permanent decorative fixture on the staircase. Five days later, Emilia returned from her trip and stopped dead when she saw the redheaded mannequin standing on the stairs. It took her several long seconds to understand what she was looking at. Then she ran to find her father. “Dad… that mannequin on the stairs… is that my friend Bianca?” she asked, close to tears. Her father looked up from his desk with a mild, almost bored expression. “Who? Oh, yeah. She signed up for a permanent job. You should be happy for her. Wasn’t this what you wanted?” he said with that stern stare she knew all too well. Emilia’s mouth went dry. “Thank you, Dad” she lied quietly. She slowly walked back to the staircase. She stood in front of the motionless mannequin for a long moment, looking up at her friend’s expressionless face. “I’m sorry, Bianca... I’ll change your clothes every week. That’s the least I could do.” she whispered. She reached out, took one of the glasses from the tray, and filled it with water from the bottle with shaky hands. “Thank you, Bianca” Emilia said softly. Then she turned and walked away, leaving her transformed childhood friend standing there... permanently posed on the staircase, offering refreshments to anyone thirsty passing by. All Bianca could do was stare forward, hoping that maybe someday she would get a better location at least.
