Alisson was twenty-seven now and some things had changed since the new year started. Her room was almost clean, which was shocking even to herself. Not because she suddenly became a functioning adult, but because the garbage piles had gotten so thick she literally could not walk to her bed anymore. The path from door to computer chair had become an obstacle course of crusty plates and empty cans and mysterious sticky patches that she did not want to investigate too closely. So she cleaned... sort of. The room was already creeping back toward its natural state of disaster, but at least she could see the floor in most places now. Her new roommate was some girl named Kira who spent most of her time at her boyfriend's place, at work or basically anywhere that was not their shared apartment. They had exchanged maybe fifty words total in the three months since Kira moved in. Perfect arrangement, really. No judgment about the smell or the lifestyle or the collection of body pillows arranged on the bed like a harem of fabric waifus. Her love life had stayed exactly where it crashed after that failed coffee date months ago. She still had those socks somewhere in her drawer. What was that guy's name again? Mark? Mike? Whatever. He made decent foot warmers during winter, even if he squirmed sometimes when she wiggled her toes. But yesterday something happened. A match on the dating app she had forgotten was even installed on her phone. Some guy in his late twenties who looked like a total geek in his profile pictures. Thick glasses. Anime shirt visible in one photo. The kind of guy who might actually understand her instead of running away screaming after ten minutes of conversation. 'Maybe this one will work out.' She scrolled through his profile again. 'And if it does not... well I could always use some new clothes.' The transformation app sat quietly in a folder on her phone. She had not used it since the sock incident, but it was always there... plan B. Safety net and a insurance against rejection. Getting ready for the date was painful. Alisson stared at her closet, which was really just a pile of clothes that had achieved some vertical height through sheer accumulation. She found a shirt that smelled acceptable and a skirt that fit if she did not breathe too deeply. The green panties were there too, still squirming faintly whenever she touched them. Poor Braelyn or whatever her name was. Kira actually stopped scrolling on her phone when Alisson emerged from her room looking presentable. "Where are you going?" "D... date." "Ohhhh cool." That was it. No follow-up questions or concern. Kira went right back to her phone and Alisson headed out the door feeling strangely nervous for the first time in years. The drive to the arcade took forever. Public transit was hell and she felt eyes on her the whole time, even though nobody was probably looking. Her skin crawled with the awareness of being outside in the real world, surrounded by normal people who showered daily and had jobs and social skills. The arcade was loud, bright and overwhelming. Screens flashed everywhere and game sounds mixed into a chaotic symphony of bleeps and bloops and electronic music. She spotted him near the entrance, looking mostly like his pictures except leaner and taller than expected. Nervous energy radiating off him like heat waves. "Hi," she said, walking up to him. He practically jumped out of his skin. His whole body went rigid and his eyes darted around like a trapped animal looking for escape routes. His mouth opened and closed several times before sounds came out. "I am... am... John..." 'Oh my god, he is just like me!' Alisson actually giggled. Not a fake polite laugh but a real one bubbling up from somewhere she had forgotten existed. This guy was a mess. A complete disaster of social anxiety and awkwardness and she found it weirdly endearing. She tried asking him questions, but every answer came out in stuttering fragments. "Where... do you work?" "C... computers..." "What games... do you like?" "Um... RPGs... and... stuff" "How long have you been... gaming?" "S... since... forever?" After a solid minute of watching him struggle to form basic sentences, he suddenly pulled out his phone with shaking hands. "Do you like games?" "Yeah, I do." The words left her mouth automatically and something pinged in the back of her brain. This felt familiar somehow. Like she had done this exact thing before but from the other side of the conversation. Then John tapped his phone screen and Alisson understood why. The tingling started in her fingers and toes. Subtle at first, like pins and needles after sitting wrong for too long. She looked down at her hands and saw her skin changing color. Shifting from pale flesh tone to bright, vivid green. 'Wait. No. This is not happening!' "What the fuck!" She tried to step back, but her legs felt heavy and strange. The green spread up her arms like dye soaking through fabric. Her skin was changing texture, to
