GOBLIN FILTH The Red Horse tavern was thick with smoke and the smell of ale, a dingy establishment on the outskirts of Baldur's Gate where the dregs of society gathered to drink away their troubles. Wooden beams crossed the low ceiling, and the floor was sticky with spilled beer and gods knew what else. It was the kind of place where questions weren't asked and coin was the only language that mattered. Koraya had been working there for a few weeks now, ever since the wandering slave trader had sold her to Reimund, the tavern's portly owner. At three and a half feet tall with green skin, pointy ears, and long black greasy hair bound into a single thick braid, she was unmistakably goblin. Her curvy build was barely contained by the traditional white and red Bavarian dirndl that Reimund made her wear—some bizarre fetish of his, she supposed. The dress pushed up her C-cup breasts and cinched at her narrow waist, the white apron tied around her wide hips. In the world of the Forgotten Realms, goblins were worth no more than animals. Inferior creatures, they were called, even though goblins were anything but stupid or antisocial. They simply weren't human, elf, or dwarf—and that was crime enough. Koraya had been relatively lucky, she told herself. Here in the tavern, she served drinks and food, got spat on occasionally, and sometimes beaten when patrons were particularly drunk or cruel. Now and then, Reimund loaned her out to adventurers for sexual gratification—a few extra gold pieces in his pocket. Lucky? Yes, it could be much, much worse. Working in the northern mines, for example, where goblins were worked to death in the darkness. Here, at least, she had food, drink, and a roof over her head. Nevertheless, she missed her tribe. Living in a forest near the Sword Coast, she could still remember the smell of the cooking fires, the sound of goblin children laughing, the feeling of belonging somewhere. Now she belonged to Reimund, and that was that. Her amber eyes scanned the room as she carried a tray loaded with beer mugs, weaving between tables with practiced ease. A group of dwarves were arguing loudly about mining techniques in one corner. Human merchants were counting coins in another. The usual crowd. She was heading toward a table of rough-looking humans when the tavern door suddenly burst open with a crash that made several patrons jump. A ranger strode into the room, and even from across the tavern, Koraya could sense the anger radiating from him. He was human, perhaps thirty years old, with short brown hair and piercing blue eyes. A scar ran down his left cheek, giving him a dangerous look. He wore brown leather armor that had seen better days, black trousers, and a dark green cloak that swirled behind him. A bow and quiver of arrows were strapped to his back. His name, she would learn, was Ken. And he was in a very, very bad mood. Koraya continued her work, not wanting to draw attention to herself. She'd learned early that the best survival strategy was to be invisible, to do her job and stay out of the way. She moved past Ken, her small frame making it easy to slip between the larger patrons. The dwarves and halflings were about her height, but most everyone else towered over her. She was almost past him when he suddenly shouted. "Hey, you little goblin bitch! Bring me a beer!" The words were so full of venom that Koraya actually stumbled, turning to look over her shoulder in surprise. She was used to harsh treatment—that was the life of a goblin slave—but there was something particularly hateful in his voice, something that went beyond casual cruelty. Her amber eyes met his blue ones for just a moment, bewildered by the intensity of his anger. That single moment of eye contact was apparently too much. Ken's hand shot out like a striking snake, grabbing her long black braid and yanking her backward with brutal force. The tray flew from her hands, beer mugs crashing to the floor in an explosion of glass and foam. Koraya screamed in pain as her scalp burned from the vicious pull. "What are you staring at, you filthy creature?" Ken snarled, his face twisted with rage. "Didn't you hear me? Bring me my fucking beer. NOW!" He released her braid with a shove, sending her sprawling to the floor. Koraya hit the sticky wooden planks hard, glass shards skittering around her. Pain lanced through her knees where they struck the ground. Her braid had come partially undone, greasy black hair falling across her face. Tears stung her amber eyes as she crawled away from him, trying to avoid the broken glass. Her scalp throbbed. Her knees ached. The other patrons watched with varying degrees of interest and amusement—just another goblin getting what goblins got. Ken loomed over her, looking down with utter contempt. "I slaughtered ten of your kind just yesterday," he said, his voice cold and matter-of-fact. "So get me my beer. Move it." Koraya nodded quickly, keeping her gaze downcast as tears streamed down her green c
