A lot has changed since humans started traveling the cosmos, but the journeys still took forever, literally years of travel time. Lauren worked as a regular barista on Earth, serving coffee to tired office workers day after day. She dreamed of living far away on an alien world, being part of the brave people building new colonies and starting points for humanity's expansion. Sadly, she was just a barista with no special skills, not an engineer, a pilot or a scientist. After making some bad financial decisions in her twenties, she was stuck in this dead-end job with no prospects. One day after her shift ended, she was scrolling through her phone in the break room when she saw something unusual pop up in her feed. A job offering for a luxury colonization mission to a paradise planet called New Eden. The post showed beautiful images of blue oceans, green forests, and gleaming white buildings. It must be amazing to live in such a place, she thought wistfully. She clicked through to check available positions and her heart jumped when she saw barista listed among the options. Her eyes went wide and she immediately filled out the application, her fingers shaking with excitement. Then came the waiting. Weeks passed with no response and Lauren convinced herself she hadn't gotten the position. But then one morning she woke up to an email notification. She had been accepted. She jumped around her tiny apartment screaming with joy. The next few days were a blur. She sold everything she didn't absolutely need. The travel would take forty years in cryosleep, so she had to say goodbye to her family, knowing she might never see them again. Her mother cried and begged her not to go, but this was Lauren's dream, even if it hurt to leave everyone behind. Launch day arrived and Lauren took a shuttle up to the Sol System shipyard orbiting Earth. The luxury colony ship was absolutely massive, easily the largest vessel she had ever seen. Over ten thousand crew and colonists would be making the journey to colonize the Earth like planet. She walked through the docking bay with her single bag of belongings, her heart pounding with excitement. At the check-in station, a stern-looking officer scanned her ID and frowned at his screen. "I'm sorry, but we don't have any cryo chambers available for you. The AI system gave out too many barista job offerings. We're overbooked." Lauren felt her world collapsing. "What? No, there has to be a mistake! I sold everything! I said goodbye to my family!" "I'm very sorry, but there's nothing I can do. You'll have to return to Earth on the next shuttle." Lauren started to panic, tears forming in her eyes. But then a voice spoke up from behind her. "What seems to be the problem, gentlemen?" She turned to see a tall, handsome man in expensive-looking clothes, clearly one of the wealthy passengers. The officer straightened up immediately. "Sir, we don't have cryo chambers for this woman. She was one too many in the barista job offerings." The rich man looked at Lauren and smiled warmly. "Make it happen. We have enough resources to accommodate an extra barista. If you don't figure it out, you'll be the one staying behind." He winked at Lauren and walked away toward the first class section. The officer's face went pale. He muttered into his communicator for a moment, then sighed. "Alright, follow me." He gestured to a security guard. "Take her to storage. We'll need to do this the old-fashioned way." Lauren followed the guard deeper into the ship, down corridors that became more industrial and less polished. They arrived at a cargo bay filled with containers and strange equipment. "Okay, look, we need to do it the old school way. You know how the first deep space travelers were transported?" "No, I don't. Tell me what you're talking about," Lauren said, fear creeping into her voice. "Well, they were converted into a gel-like substance and then cryo-frozen, similar to how we preserve food. It's perfectly safe, you'll be restored when we arrive." "Wait, you want to turn me into fucking gelatin?!" Lauren nearly shouted. He shrugged. "We can do this, or you can spend forty years walking around the ship with no money, no pay, which means no food and no activities. You'd be a stowaway. Your choice." Lauren ran her hand through her hair, her mind racing. She had come too far to turn back now. "Fine. I'll fucking do it." The guard led her to a chamber next to agricultural processing equipment. She saw a mango being processed, its solid fruit flesh liquefying into a translucent gel that was poured into a container and instantly frozen. Her stomach turned at the thought of undergoing the same process. "Go on, step inside," the guard said, opening the chamber door. Lauren stepped into the cold, sterile chamber, the metal floor freezing against her bare feet. She had stripped down to just her underwear as instructed. The door sealed behind her and lights turned on, bathing her in a strange blue glow. Immediately, she
