Alexis woke up from a rough college day yesterday, his head pounding like Harper woke up to a pounding headache and a body that felt completely wrong in ways she could not immediately understand, her memories of the previous night's company drinking party scattered into fragments that refused to reassemble into anything coherent and were more like a fever dream. She was in her bedroom, but the angle was all wrong and everything looked impossibly huge. The most confusing of it all, she could not feel her heartbeat, no matter how hard she pressed her hand against her chest. That was the first thing that truly terrified her. She pressed harder, pushing her palm flat against where her heart should have been, and there was nothing. No thump, pulse or even rhythm of life beating inside her. Just solid stillness that felt completely wrong. She tried to move her fingers and found that they would not bend the way fingers were supposed to bend because they were not fingers anymore, they were flat brown bige shape attached to flat brown hands attached to flat brown arms. The joints did not flex smoothly; they creaked and cracked like someone snapping a cookie in half, and when she finally managed to look down at herself, she saw a female looking gingerbread. "WHAT THE FUCK?!" The world had been like this for six centuries now, ever since humans lost the Hundred Year War against the monsters and were absorbed into their society rather than being eradicated. Humans like Harper were rare these days, most people having at least some monster blood in their lineage and being a pure human meant being weak, squishy and utterly unremarkable in a world full of creatures who could breathe fire or transform at will or live for a thousand years. She was just an office worker, not even a witch or wizard, just a normal woman trying to survive in a job that slowly crushed her soul. And now she was a fucking gingerbread cookie. Her voice came out high and strange, like air whistling through a crack in a baked good, and the sound of it made her stomach drop, except she was not sure she had a stomach anymore. She scrambled to her feet on the massive surface she had been lying on, which turned out to be the kitchen table she remembered collapsing against sometime around midnight. She was maybe six inches tall now, her entire body made of baked gingerbread in the rough shape of a woman, and she was wearing what appeared to be a bra and panties made of black frosting that clung to her cookie flesh. Harper stood there shaking, her gingerbread body making tiny crackling sounds with each tremor. She tried to process what had happened to her, she tried to touch her own arm and felt the texture under her thumb like arm, it was rough and grainy like actual gingerbread, with that same slight give that a fresh cookie had before it went stale. When she pressed harder she could feel the surface dimple slightly and it sent a spike of panic through her because what if she pressed too hard and cracked herself? Would they grow back or would she stay broken forever? The train station at her stop was emptier than the main hub, but still took forever to navigate with her tiny gingerbread legs, each step requiring concentration to keep her balance on limbs that did not bend the way human legs were supposed to bend. By the time Harper reached the front doors of Hell Company it was already ten fifty in the morning and she was officially in deep trouble. Her whole body ached in that muted gingerbread way, and she was starting to recognise the difference between the dull sensation of cookie fatigue and the sharper feeling of surface damage. The company was run by demon folk who did not bother hiding what they were, the name itself a joke that stopped being funny after your first week of sixteen-hour shifts and impossible deadlines. The building loomed above her like a mountain, its glass doors reflecting her tiny form back at her, and she felt more vulnerable than she ever had in her entire human life. Nick the male lamia, was outside smoking a cigarette with his noise-cancelling headphones on, his serpentine lower body coiled beneath him as he leaned against the wall and ignored the world. Harper screamed up at him with everything her cookie lungs could produce. "NICK! I AM DOWN HERE! OPEN THE DOOR PLEASE!" He did not even glance in her direction, the smoke from his cigarette drifting down toward her and making her cough, even though she was not sure gingerbread could cough. She jumped and waved and screamed until her throat felt raw and scratchy in a way that alarmed her because what if she damaged herself and could not speak anymore? But Nick just finished his cigarette and slithered inside without acknowledging her existence. She managed to dart through the gap before the door closed, her gingerbread body scraping against the frame. The massive lobby stretched out before her like a desert, furniture legs rising like columns and potted plants towering like t
