It was Thanksgiving morning and the absolute worst thing that could happen on such an important holiday had just occurred. All the food had spoiled. Every single dish that had been carefully prepared the day before was now completely ruined. The turkey, the stuffing, the cranberry sauce, the pies, everything was gone bad. The reason? The refrigerator had completely died overnight after someone plugged their phone charger into the outlet the fridge was using, tripping the circuit breaker. That someone was Cassandra, the oldest daughter of the family, who was twenty-eight years old and still living at home with her parents. The worst part was that everyone in the family, except Cassandra and her father, had magical abilities. Her mother was a powerful witch, her younger sister Madeline, who was twenty-one, had just returned from a prestigious magic academy, and even her younger brother had some talent. But Cassandra had been born completely without any magical gift, which had always made her feel like an outsider in her own family. She compensated by being bratty and dismissive about magic. Her mother's voice echoed up the stairs, filled with fury. "CASSANDRA! GET DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW!" Cassandra stomped down the stairs in her pajamas, already knowing what this was about. She entered the kitchen to find her mother standing with her arms crossed, her younger sister Madeline smirking in the corner, and her father trying to make himself invisible by pretending to read the newspaper. "Do you have ANY idea what you've done?" her mother said, her voice dangerously calm. "I plugged in my phone charger. Big deal," Cassandra said with a shrug. "You unplugged the REFRIGERATOR! All of our Thanksgiving food is RUINED! Hundreds of dollars worth of food, hours of preparation, all GONE because you couldn't be bothered to use a different outlet!" Cassandra rolled her eyes. "It's just food, mom. Calm down." Her father lowered his newspaper slightly. "Cassandra, maybe you should apologize..." "Stay out of this, honey," her mother said sharply. Her father immediately raised the newspaper back up and seemed to sink into his chair, trying to disappear completely. "I'm sorry your precious food went bad, okay? Happy now?" Cassandra said with obvious sarcasm. Madeline spoke up from the corner. "You should help Mom go buy new food and prepare everything again. It's the least you could do." "Why should I? I didn't ask for a big stupid Thanksgiving dinner anyway," Cassandra shot back. Her mother's eye twitched. "You will help me fix this situation right now, young lady." "Who cares? Can't you just use magic to make more food? You're always going on about how powerful you are. Just magic up a new turkey or whatever." The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees. Madeline's eyes went wide and she took a step back. Their father slowly lowered his newspaper again, looking worried. He decided to take a teactical bathroom break, getting away pretty fast. "What... did you just say?" her mother said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I said, use your magic to fix it. That's what you always do, right? Use magic to solve all your problems? So go ahead, wave your wand and make everything better." Her mother's face turned red with rage. Madeline whispered urgently, "Cassandra, shut up right now. You've pushed her too far." But Cassandra kept going. "Or is your magic not actually that useful? Maybe that's why you can't just fix the food problem yourself." Her mother's hands clenched into fists and magical energy started crackling around them. "Fine. You want me to fix this with magic? Then I will fix it with MAGIC!" She thrust her hand forward and a bolt of purple energy shot out and hit Cassandra square in the chest. Cassandra gasped and stumbled backward. Her clothes suddenly vanished, leaving her completely naked. Before she could even process what happened, an invisible force grabbed her and slammed her down onto the dining room table, spreading her out flat on her back. "Mom! What the fuck!" Cassandra screamed, trying to get up. But her mother was already walking away toward the pantry. "You're about to become very useful for once this week." Cassandra felt intense heat building inside her body, like she was being cooked from the inside out. Her limbs felt heavy and sluggish. She tried to push herself up off the table, but her arms wouldn't respond properly. They felt soft, weak, like they were losing all their strength. She looked down at her hands and watched in horror as her fingers started losing definition. The individual digits began melting together, the skin becoming softer and more pliable. "What's happening to me?!" Her arms started melting like candle wax, the solid flesh turning into a thick, viscous liquid that pooled on the table beneath her. The sensation was bizarre and terrifying. She could still feel everything, but her limbs were literally liquefying. Her legs went next, the bones dissolving, the muscles turnin
