Halloween descended upon Apex City. Streets teemed with tiny monsters, superheroes, and princesses clutching plastic pumpkins and pillowcases. Some even were painted pink, just like Elasticia. Everyone enjoyed the occasion, except the lone figure patrolling rooftops. Elasticia sat a gargoyle, her pink form glowing faintly against the darkening sky. She had modified her usual costume for the holiday, adding cat ears that perked up from her head and a long tail that occasionally flicked with frustration. The accessories weren't separate pieces but extensions of herself, her malleable substance shaped into cat features. "Stupid patrol duty," she muttered, watching children skip between decorated houses. Her phone buzzed, her sister sending pictures of her nephews dressed as miniature versions of Captain Kinetic, Dr. Synapse and her. Her rubbery fingers stretched unnaturally as she typed heart emojis in response. A familiar voice interrupted her moping. "Hey there, rubberband. Looking a little down. Costume is cute though." Elasticia nearly dropped her phone, her malleable body jiggling in surprise. Darkgravity, formerly known as Greta, hovered beside the gargoyle, her gravity powers allowing her a silent arrival. "Jesus fuck! When did you get here?" Elasticia scrambled to her feet, her cat tail bristling involuntarily. "Oh, right, you can fly. And silently. That is just fucking perfect." Greta looked puzzled. She had planned to torment her former victim, but Elasticia seemed genuinely dejected. The catty remarks died in her throat. "What is the problem with the questionable, barely family-friendly rubber hero?" she asked instead. Elasticia's shoulders slumped, her pink form drooping slightly. "Nothing. I just want to go trick-or-treating." "Trick-or-treating?" Greta blinked in surprise. "What are you talking about? Aren't you like thirty?" "Twenty-six," Elasticia corrected angrily. "Look, I turn into a form that makes me look younger and collect candy. It is something normal I can do despite everything else in my fucking life being bizarre." Greta raised an eyebrow. "You cannot even eat them." "Yeah, I cannot. Food just sits inside me until I squeeze it out." Elasticia shuddered at the memory. "But the thrill is more important." She looked up at Darkgravity with hopeful eyes. "I just need someone to cover my sector for like two hours." Greta sighed dramatically. "Alright, I will have an eye on your sector." Elasticia squealed with delight, her entire body vibrating with excitement. She launched herself at Greta, wrapping stretchy arms around her multiple times. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" "You owe me now!" Greta called, but Elasticia had already leapt away, her body stretching between buildings as she headed toward the residential neighborhoods. Once safely away from hero territory, Elasticia began her transformation. Her malleable form contracted and reshaped, pink substance flowing until she resembled a child of perhaps ten. Her costume remained cat-themed, but she added an impressive modification as her lower body transformed into what appeared to be a child-sized pink Ferrari. It looked as though a kid was riding in a rubber car costume. She adjusted her larynx, shifting the elastic fibers until her voice sounded appropriately childlike. "Perfect," she giggled, testing her new pitch. The first hour proved magical. House after house yielded compliments on her 'amazing costume' and generous handfuls of candy. Her pillowcase grew heavy with chocolate bars and sugary treats she would never taste. Eventually, she turned onto Willow Street, a block most trick-or-treaters seemed to avoid. One house stood out. There stood a Victorian structure with decorations that looked eerily authentic. Spider webs stretched across the porch with spiders that appeared to twitch in the moonlight. Gravestones dotted the front yard, their inscriptions weathered by what seemed like decades of exposure. "Why is no one going here?" she wondered aloud. The place screamed 'full-sized candy bars' to her experienced eye. Elasticia approached the door, her rubber tires squeaking slightly against the wooden porch. She knocked, adjusting her posture to appear more childlike. The door creaked open, revealing a woman who epitomized the word 'witch' more than any costume Elasticia had ever seen. Gnarled fingers, wart-covered nose, flowing black robes straight out of a storybook. "Trick or treat!" Elasticia chirped in her practiced child voice. The witch studied her with ancient eyes, then smiled, revealing teeth too perfect for her character. "You know a witch cannot be tricked that easily, do you?" she cackled. Elasticia tilted her head in confusion. "What do you mean?" The witch clapped her hands once, the sound echoing unnaturally loud. Instantly, Elasticia felt her transformation dissolve. Her carefully crafted child form melted away, revealing her true self, though still wearing the cat ears and tail. "Wait, how did you!?" "I am a
