Brielle Nakamura adjusted her goggles at Tufts University's Olympic pool. As a freshman on athletic scholarship, she wasn't the star of the swim team, but she consistently placed in the top twenty. "Nakamura! What's your time on the hundred?" Coach Thaddeus bellowed from across the deck, his barrel chest puffed out beneath his polo shirt. "One-oh-three, Coach!" she called back, voice bouncing off the water's surface. "Not good enough! Get it under a minute by regionals or kiss that anchor position goodbye!" His face flushed red beneath salt-and-pepper stubble. Coach Thaddeus Blackwood ran the team like a military operation. His infamous 'Team Spirit Initiative' mandated everyone contribute regardless of circumstances. The rule looked impressive in university brochures. In practice, it was his way of squeezing free labor while funneling team funds into his personal accounts. Brielle dove into the pool, her body slicing through water with practiced precision. She completed three laps when disaster struck. Pushing off the wall for her turn, her foot caught the edge at an awkward angle. Pain shot through her ankle as she tumbled awkwardly into the water."AAAAHHH!" Her scream echoed through the natatorium, causing heads to snap in her direction. Two teammates pulled her from the pool as she clutched her ankle. The team medic examined the foot. It was swollen, turning purple, but not broken. "Severe sprain," he declared. "No swimming for at least three weeks." "My office. Now," Thaddeus commanded, looming over her dripping form. His cramped office reeked of protein powder and stale sweat. He settled into his creaking chair while Brielle perched uncomfortably on a metal stool. "You know the policy, Nakamura. Everyone contributes." "Of course, Coach. I can handle paperwork or..." "We're short on competition suits," he interrupted. "Order got delayed again." "I could call the supplier..." "Problem's already solved. They said they will arrive as fast as possible." His smile never reached his eyes. "Tufts's engineering department developed something revolutionary. Recycling technology that can transform anything into anything else." Brielle shifted uncomfortably. "How does that help with swimsuits?" "Their machine can transform people into objects. Temporary, of course." He leaned forward. "The human mind remains intact, and it's fully reversible." "That can't be legal," Brielle stammered, heart pounding in her chest. "The university classifies it as 'exploratory research.' Perfectly legitimate." His tone hardened. "Are you committed to this team, Nakamura? Because I've got three freshmen who would kill for your scholarship." Brielle's stomach dropped. Her single mother worked double shifts to afford the remaining tuition not covered by her scholarship. "Fine," she whispered. "I'll do it." The basement hummed with the noises of big washing machines. Harsh blinding lights illuminated a contraption resembling an industrial-sized scanner with conveyor belts at both ends. "Hola, swimmer girl." Consuela, a middle-aged janitor with tired eyes and calloused hands, gestured toward the machine. "You volunteer? Good. You strip now. All clothing off." Naked and trembling, Brielle lay on the cold conveyor belt. The rubber surface stuck to her bare back as the machine hummed louder. The conveyor sprang into motion, pulling her into darkness. The first pass yielded nothing but system errors. Consuela glared at the red messages flashing on the screen and tapped several buttons. "Machine not work?" Brielle asked, sitting up. Consuela poked Brielle's stomach, her finger sank in like memory foam. "Is working. Go back in now." The second pass brought tingling heat spreading through Brielle's body. When she emerged, her reflection in the overhead glass showed a humanoid form with softened features, like a realistic mannequin. "Nnnnggg," Brielle tried to speak, but produced only muffled sounds. The third pass brought compression to her arms and legs, folding inward, merging with her torso. Her head sank between her shoulders, features flattening. On the fourth pass, Brielle's consciousness spread thin across a flat surface. She felt herself stretching, thinning, her three-dimensional form collapsing into two dimensions. The final pass sealed her fate. When Brielle emerged, she was a sleek blue competition swimsuit with white racing stripes. Her awareness existed throughout every fiber of the synthetic material. Consuela lifted her carefully, examining the suit before drawing a small red X on the label. "There. Now I'll find you after." Time passed strangely for Brielle. Without eyelids to blink or lungs to breathe, her awareness remained constant. Every air current passing through her fabric felt strangely intimate, especially across areas that had once been her most private parts. Eventually, a swimmer with short blue hair and striking pink eyes approached. "This one looks good," said Zepy, a sophomore teammate. In the changing room, Bri
