Chloe was a full-time cosplayer… well, she was TRYING to be. Eight months in, fresh to the scene, twenty four years old, long dark hair to her waist, a figure that made every costume look commissioned and a small but growing following. She loved it more than anything. The conventions, the photoshoots, the sewing until 3 AM. What she did NOT love was her barista job, and when the last venue wrapped and the last shoot paid out, she sat on her floor with a calculator and a sinking feeling. The numbers didn't reach her next payment. Not even close. It was apron and espresso machine time again and the thought made her want to lie face down on the rug forever. Then her friend Nadia sent her a link with too many exclamation points. "There's this new gig, it's PERFECT for you girl!! Companies turn people into things now. For marketing! Shops, displays, that stuff. It's super new, but they pay and like, think about it!!" Chloe read the FAQ three times. It was real. Licensed transformation centers, legal contracts, full restoration guaranteed and the benefits list was insane. Transformed people didn't age. Didn't need food or water. Didn't gain weight. Didn't pay rent on their own body's upkeep. 'Wait,' she thought, sitting up. 'Wait wait wait… I could be pretty in a shop, pause my whole metabolism, pop back out for con season, throw on a cosplay and I won't have aged a DAY or gained an OUNCE or spent a CENT on groceries. This is just... free time skip? This is amazing?!' She hunted through the listings for a few days and found the perfect one. A local clothing shop wanted a display mannequin and the owner loved her pitch: they'd put a small sign at her feet with a QR code linking straight to her Instagram. Free advertising for five months while she literally slept through her financial problems. The contract was straightforward. Five months as a mannequin and, the coordinator explained, she wouldn't be aware most of the time. The consciousness dims to standby. "Trust us, you want that. Being a mannequin twenty-four seven with a full active mind? People go strange. You'll surface now and then, that's normal, but mostly you'll just... skip ahead." 'Fine by me. Being bored is the one thing I can't afford.' The Metaform center smelled like a dentist's office and new plastic. The receptionist checked her in, had her strip and store her things and handed her a pair of tiny sunglasses, perched absurdly on her nose. "For the flash. So the machine doesn't blind you. Step into the capsule, please, and give us a nice pose! Whatever you pick is what the shop gets, so make it good." Chloe stepped into the capsule, thought of every store window she'd ever passed and struck it. Weight on one leg, hip popped, one hand behind her head, the other resting on her hip, chin up, a bright showroom smile. "Perfect! Hold that." The capsule hummed shut around her. Light built inside it, white and total. Her skin froze first. The surface of her locked mid pose, every fine hair, every pore, fixing in place like the world's fastest setting resin, and the sensation sank inward from there, down through fat and muscle and THAT part felt like cramps. Deep, hard, full body muscle cramps, every fiber seizing at once, her calves, her back, her jaw, everything clenching around the pose and refusing to release. 'Ow ow ow ow… okay they did NOT mention the cramp part~' It held for a few long minutes, then strangely, faded back to normal. The tension simply left, because the muscles left, dissolving into smooth solid material, and she realized she couldn't move an inch. Not a finger or her eyes. Her heartbeat slowed, spaced out, and quietly stopped being relevant. Color drained down her body in a smooth wave. Her warm skin tone paled to a flawless glossy white, her long dark hair loosening at the roots, becoming a wig she could still faintly feel resting on her scalp. Her insides simplified, organs fading out one by one like lights in a closing shop, leaving hollow smoothness. Her mind went pleasantly fuzzy at the edges, thoughts moving slower, softer, wrapped in cotton. Then the LINES came. She felt them draw themselves across her body, thin perfect seams, circling her shoulders, her upper thighs, the base of her neck, her wrists, and they went DEEP, deeper and it felt like they would cut her apart entirely, a bright ring of separation sinking through her solid flesh at each joint. 'Wait~ wait no~ that's going to~ I'm going to come apart!' But the parts never separated. The seams simply finished, and settled, and became part of her. She was whole, and she was also, now, sectional. She could feel it. The torso was HER, somehow, the core of her, and the arms and legs and head were hers but attached, plugged in, extensions. The capsule opened. The operator, a woman with kind eyes and cotton gloves, plucked the tiny sunglasses off her frozen nose. "There we go. Gorgeous pose, honey. You're going to sell SO much swimwear!" Then the woman took her apart. Each li
